![]() ![]() ![]() The Falconeer takes flight on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S on November 10th. The opening credits include the names of a few other folks who handled things like music, sound design and voice recording, but otherwise this is Sala’s work. What’s most impressive about The Falconeer is that it’s largely the work of a single developer, Tomas Sala. Even just looking at the various outposts reveals a ton about this world, in which it’s clear people desperately scrambled to create a home on whatever land seemed like it’d remain after the flood. The factions all have their own wants, needs and histories to discover. The early chapters lay the foundations of a seemingly absorbing story, even if it seems a bit dense at first. I have to give credit to the world-building here. There always seems to be a new location to discover. There’s one area that’s especially stunning, a chasm in the middle of the map that I can’t resist dive bombing into whenever I’m close by. Simply traveling across the landscape of The Great Ursee is a delight. It's always worth taking time to explore The Great Ursee in The Falconeer. Using an ocean thermal to thrust yourself up into the sky is always a blast, and practicing diving, dodging and barrel rolls is fun too. Once you find the right rhythm, though, the movement feels great. It takes a little getting used to, since you’ll need to soar and swoop down to build up a meter so you can fly faster. There’s flight stick support as well, which could make guiding your warbird through the dogfighting sequences a bit easier. Luckily, you have allies you can point towards a target, which helped a ton while I got to grips with the combat mechanics. I found it tricky to get the hang of and my initial mid-air battles seemed to last much longer than they should, despite a fairly solid targeting system. The one thing I’m not totally sold on yet is the combat. There’s just enough variety in the missions to keep them interesting, but I hope there’ll be even more to do in later chapters. There are even some races for you to tackle. You can take on a variety of missions for them, such as escort tasks, supply runs, spying and multi-stage assignments. There are multiple factions spread out across this world. The animations and character design are spot on - you’ll come across several eye-catching creatures on your adventures. Calm waters morph into stormy, rolling waves and back again in the space of a few minutes. There are dramatic weather effects to keep your journeys interesting. The Falconeer encourages players to venture out into the world of the Great Ursee and see what they can find in the downtime between engagements. The setting is The Great Ursee, a world that has been devastated by flooding. In fact, as my colleague Miles Dompier explained in his exclusive first look at The Falconeer, exploration is a large part of the gameplay experience as well. Opposing falcon-riders, zeppelin warships, ground-based fortifications, and massive crustaceans are all potential adversaries you'll come across in the Great Ursee, and each foe will require a different tactic in order to succeed. In terms of what enemies you'll be facing, there are many different types. ![]() However, these are also needed for your faction, so you might not want to spend them all on yourself. You can also improve the stats of your gear and your falcon by turning in soulshards, a currency obtained by defeating enemies and completing missions. We don't yet know the full extent of what the player's arsenal contains just yet, but gameplay footage does show that players can use their falcon to perform quick rolls and flips to dodge gunfire or quickly change direction. The massive falcon you ride around is as responsive as a plane, and from its back, you can pepper foes with a hail of energy bolts and other types of weaponry. ![]() Gameplay-wise, The Falconeer is mainly about using skillful flying and smart tactics to take down the enemy. ![]() ![]() ![]() Set in the Spanish kingdom of Castilla during the Middle Ages, you will be invited to take part in a love letter to Spanish folklore and the best of retro platformers. This again adds to the process of learning the levels and becoming more skilled. Chest locations and their contents are set, which can be refreshing in this age of procedurally generated levels. Strategies for combating enemies also require a good knowledge of the various weapons available and picking the power up most appropriate for what you’re facing. Even here, though, most deaths could be attributed to lapses in concentration or foolishly trying to sneak an extra hit in. At least until the endgame, where a sequence of three boss fights proved particularly punishing. The overall difficulty of the game is well set, and I always felt that I was making progress. The overall difficulty of the game is well set This line of thinking also goes for the boss fights, which are easy to read and aren’t as tough as you’d think. Levels aren’t procedurally done, and the design is thoughtful enough that you can see the patterns emerge and come up with a strategy for beating a stage. Sounds quite forgiving doesn’t it? Well there is a slight catch There are other things that help ease the pain of the initial difficulty. If you run out of lives there are continues which also start you at the checkpoint and you can continue as many times as you need to. ![]() This can make things harder but I think the leniency shown with the checkpoints makes it an understandable decision. If you do die you return to the default sword and lose whatever sub item you had, if you had one. Each level also has multiple checkpoints, including at bosses so you don’t have to repeat entire levels unless you quit the game and come back which will start you at the beginning of whatever level you ended on. Falling into a pit or onto spikes will instantly kill you so it’s lucky that you have three lives to work with as well. There’s no armour mechanic but if you find some meat in a chest you can replenish some health. Cursed Castilla is a little more lenient than you might imagine with you having three hearts equating to three hits. You can only carry one so again it’ll be up to you whether you’d prefer points, more power or the safety net of a free hit. These range from a point doubler to a fairy that will attack with you, boots that give you a double jump or a shield that will absorb a hit. There are also sub items that you can pick up. The lack of a controlled mid-air jump doesn’t help things, and neither does the fact that you can’t attack while climbing ropes and chains. Part of that comes from the adherence to the knockback mechanic, which has you falling backward once you get hit, often resulting in you falling into spikes and a few pits. This game happens to share one thing that made Capcom’s classic so infamous: the difficulty. The stages are also punctuated with several boss fights. Similar to the original Castlevania, the stages are segmented into smaller areas instead of being one sprawling trek from beginning to end. Power-ups, like a shield or fairy, stay with you until you pick up another one to replace it, similar to the weapons system. You can take three hits instead of two before a life ends. If you’re looking at the general gameplay, the differences between Capcom’s game and Cursed Castilla are small. Death means that you’ll return to a basic sword. Pick up the ax, and you have to compensate for your attack arcs while the holy water means having to worry about your slower attack speed. The weapon set is varied enough that each one you equip completely alters your attack strategy. You have a set number of lives and the ability to take very few hits per life before a continue is needed. You have a knight that specializes in throwing projectiles in the four cardinal directions instead of using melee combat. Standpoint, both titles are similar enough. “Maledict Castile”), known in North America and PAL regions as Cursed Castilla, is a unique 16-bit arcade action video game developed by Locomalito and released in December 2012.
